Raleigh Labiaplasty Procedures

Labia hypertrophy is a condition in which the inner “lips” of the vulva (labia minora) are enlarged to the point where they extend outward past the labia majora. Even though it’s not often spoken about, many women experience this issue. Unfortunately, they often suffer in silence, whether it’s the emotional effects, such as a lack of confidence or embarrassment at how they look or physical discomfort including irritation, tugging or pinching, or pain during sexual activity.

There isn’t a specific reason behind what causes labia hypertrophy – some women develop this issue in their youth, other women experience it due to hormone fluctuations during pregnancy, childbirth, or even as they age. Fortunately, you don’t have to experience discomfort, pain, or embarrassment. At our surgery center in Raleigh, board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Ortiz, performs labiaplasty, an outpatient procedure that reshapes and reduces the size of the labia minora.

Is Labiaplasty Right for You?

Labiaplasty is an outpatient procedure in which Dr. Ortiz will reduce and reshape the tissue in one of two ways, either by trimming the excess and using dissolving sutures to close the edges, or by trimming wedge-shaped areas from each side, then joining them to create a smaller labia minora. During a consultation, Dr. Ortiz will walk you through your options and determine which is best for your labiaplasty.

After a labiaplasty, most patients experience swelling and soreness and take a week or so off of work. It's also recommended to wait up to six weeks after your procedure to engage in intercourse. Labiaplasty may be performed alone or as part of a mommy makeover or menopause makeover. You can learn more about the procedure by reading our frequently asked questions about labiaplasty.

Should You Choose Labiaplasty?

If elongated or asymmetrical labia is causing you pain and discomfort or you're worried or embarrassed when with a partner, changing clothes, or wearing a bathing suit, a labiaplasty can improve your quality of life. After having the procedure and recovering, many women experience little to no chafing or irritation and report an improvement in their confidence and body image.
