If you’ve recently been diagnosed with skin cancer, we understand how scary this may be, but you’re not alone. Approximately 3 million people receive a diagnosis of non-melanoma skin cancer annually in the United States. Fortunately, this type of skin cancer rarely spreads and removal surgeries have a very high success rate. Dr. Ortiz works with people regularly to remove cancerous growths and can help you or a loved one with this problem.
Skin cancer removal procedures are often very successful because there are several effective methods to remove the lesions, many of which are simple, surface procedures. One of the most common ways to remove non-melanoma skin cancer is with an excision - a quick outpatient procedure involving cutting the cancerous growth out of the skin with a small section of surrounding healthy skin. Then the area is closed to reduce or minimize scarring.
In more complex cases, a growth may be what is called an "iceberg," meaning the cancerous growth is much larger under the skin's surface. However, the cancer cells can still be removed thoroughly while minimizing the removal of healthy skin and tissue. This may be a longer procedure, but we take utmost care to remove all the cancer cells. Dr. Ortiz also takes great care to prevent or minimize scarring, especially because most skin cancer is caused by sun exposure to visible areas of the body.
