What is Liposuction?

Liposuction can remove fat deposits from many areas of the body, including the abdomen, buttocks, legs, arms, breasts, back, and neck. There are two liposuction techniques: suction-assisted liposuction and ultrasound-assisted liposuction. During suction-assisted liposuction, a solution of saline, water, and anesthesia is injected into the fat cells that will be removed. Then, using a cannula similar to an IV needle, the fat is sucked out. Ultrasound-assisted liposuction uses a special cannula that vibrates rapidly and gives off ultrasound energy to remove fat cells. The cannula is inserted into the area to be contoured and as it passes through the fat cells, the fat is liquefied by the energy and the cells are suctioned out. During your consultations, Dr. Ortiz will discuss these methods with you and decide which would be most appropriate for your procedure. Both methods are outpatient procedures with minimal scarring and a downtime of less than two weeks.
